Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. It is a one-day federal holiday in the United States, observed on the fourth Thursday of November.

For many households, the day revolves around a meal with family and friends. Parades, televised football, church services and meals for people in need are also part of the observance.

How the fourth Thursday became the rule

Thanksgiving fell on different dates, and New England communities developed their own customs. In 1863, after advocacy by Sarah Josepha Hale, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November.

The shift from the last Thursday to the fourth Thursday came later. Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the measure that established the uniform national date in 1941. The fourth-Thursday rule determines the date in 2026.

Plymouth and the holiday’s religious roots

The national holiday grew out of regional harvest customs, New England religious days of thanksgiving and presidential proclamations. It was not a single annual celebration carried forward without interruption from the colonial period. The modern national observance dates to Lincoln’s proclamation.

The best-known episode in its history is the Plymouth harvest gathering in the autumn of 1621. Over three days, the Pilgrims celebrated a successful harvest with Wampanoag people, who joined the gathering and contributed food. The exact date is unknown. Contemporary accounts described a harvest celebration, not the annual Thanksgiving holiday observed today.

Calling that gathering the “first Thanksgiving” leaves out other parts of the history. Plymouth Colony declared a civil thanksgiving day in 1623, two years after the feast; it is the earliest known declaration of that kind in the New England tradition. Religious thanksgiving services elsewhere in what became the United States took place before the Plymouth gathering as well.

What goes on the table

Turkey anchors many Thanksgiving dinners, often served with mashed potatoes, squash, corn, green beans and cranberry sauce. Many of these foods connect the modern menu to New England harvest traditions.

Macaroni and cheese and pecan pie are part of Southern celebrations, while wild rice stuffing has a place in the Great Lakes region. International and ethnic dishes also belong at Thanksgiving tables.

Nor is the modern dinner a reconstruction of the 1621 feast. Foods available around Plymouth included fish, eels, shellfish, corn-based dishes, wild fowl and venison. Today’s spread reflects the holiday’s later development as well as its harvest roots.

Parades, football and observance beyond the meal

The televised Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a morning tradition for many viewers, with live football broadcasts following later in the day. Watching parades and American football, or attending in person, has become part of the holiday alongside the family meal.

Special Thanksgiving church services offer a setting for prayer and gratitude.

Churches and other charitable organizations also distribute turkeys and other food to people in need. Organizations serve Thanksgiving dinners for those who might otherwise go without, extending the day’s meal tradition beyond private homes.
